Over the past month I have been on a
painful journey to learn battle spot singles in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire for an upcoming gym challenge going on at a convention I’m heading to in July. Singles not being my strength I had to work from the ground up on what exactly was required from the mindset used for singles as its very, very different compared to doubles and even triples.
I used the Global Link to get an assessment of what is used in the meta and then started work using team builders and actually playing learning from the weaknesses and the developed counters and variations at the time of writing this is the team
Porygon2 @ Eviolite
EVs: 244 HP / 252 Def / 12 SpD
– Ice Beam
This build is pretty much from Smogon I swapped out the T.Wave for Toxic as I’ve found the steady pressure it offers gives Porygon2’s an impressive edge in long-term survival combined with Trace and the right enemy can make him even more devastating I’ve had him go up against a Rhyperior that had the ability Solid Rock which then became Porygon 2’s ability he then proceeded to wipe the team as even super effective attack type attacks were doing nothing to him.
Garchomp @ Life Orb
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
– Stone Edge
Garchomp is fully invested in speed and attack I then added on the Life Orb for the 30% extra damage output as the traditional sword dance approach is too predictable, I’ve found that an outrage as the first move usually prevails 9/10 times I’ve had this situation. The Flamethrower is for the heavy steel types and also for a possible chance of burning the target and EQ mainly for Aeglislash and for its STAB qualities, stone edge is obviously for the flying types. when I put these 4 types of moves into the Pokemon type effective calculator I have coverage to hit 495 Pokemon as super effective while 305 are hit are normal effectiveness excellent diversity, of course the 4x weakness to Ice is a real nightmare to dodge and predict.
Talonflame(Winston Mark 4) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 172 HP / 244 Def / 92 Spe
– Brave Bird
I originally had a full investment into attack and speed but I wanted to try something that could take a few more hits out as a possible tank, with priority roost you could stall out quite a few mon using WoW the taunt is to shutdown enemies that can recover/rest, im not a fan of the one move approach but so far the change to this build has proven very good, the rocky Helmet then is a fantastic item as the user will keep hitting you in hopes for a possible crit or a input error with not roosting enough and wearing themselves out in the process.
Manectric(Pathmaker) @ Manectite
Ability: Lightning Rod
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
– Volt Switch
– Hidden Power Ice
Manectric has been a major component in this team thanks to its diversity and its speed. When in mega form is nearly unmatched in special attack and speed in smogon tier’s but sadly in battle spot legendary-mon can outspeed it, but screw that all i care about is using it in the gym battles at the next anime convention where legendaries are banned because of this his diversity, power and speed will reign supreme he has caused many rage quits in his use online 😉 with his current setup in the calculator it can take on 451 as super effective hits then 348 as normal damage with only 1 Pokemon being a struggle as not very effective (rotom-heat). Volt switch may be changed out closer to the tournament date, more online analysis is required before i can justify this though.
Sylveon @ Weakness Policy
EVs: 236 HP / 12 Def / 248 SpA / 12 Spe
– Hyper Voice
– Shadow Ball
– Hidden Power Fire
I’ve opted for another one of smogons finest builds, I made a change of using weakness Policy because its just too tempting to use poison on this juicy happy target that added 2x Sp.Attack boost turns him into a almighty wall breaker, shame his speed is awful at best.
Scizor @ Sirtus Berry
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
– Bullet Punch
– Sword Dance
– Knock Off
Scizor can wall certain teams that lack the “fire” power (like what i done there?) by just wearing them down, I chose knock off due to its ability to hit ghosts I didn’t want to end up being screwed by not being able to hurt possible threats like Sableye or a tanky Gengar. Scizor is a decent tank with this build but his diversity leaves something to yearn for.
I have 3 different options for swapping out Scizor but until after the con which is on starting this friday ill have to keep those to myself.
